The Friends of Balcones Park are teaming with Austin Parks Foundation to do an Earth Day project on April 22, Saturday, 9am-12noon. Priority 1 -finish clearing debris from the “creekside” trail in the park/greenbelt. We made a good start on this on It’s My Park Day! This work will count towards our grant for repairing the chuckholes in the trail.
If we get done, or have lots of people, we will move down to the creek/greenbelt by Mopac and clean trash.
Note, this is not a kid-friendly project as there will be lots of rocks and large branches to move.

Due to the rain last Saturday, we were unable to complete the planned projects. We will try to finish the projects this Saturday 3/11 starting at 10 in the following priority
1) Mulching the remaining trees – We need to get the remaining mulch around the trees to suppress weeds and build healthy roots to survive the summer heat!
2) Trail debris clearing
3) Invasive species removal
We will work until around 2 PM, but if even if you can only spare an hour, please consider lending a hand. Thanks and we hope to see you in the park!

This means the Neighborhood Partnering Program will help us make much needed repairs to our trail! See Details HERE
The current paved trail is getting worse rapidly. In addition there is a endangered Jollyville Salamander’s habitat along the trail and continued erosion might cause the habitat and salamander some problems. We proposed that we fix these issues which would make the trail bike and stroller worthy and once the Connector Trail to Walnut Metro Creek Park is complete it will make for a very nice loop around the edge of Balcones Park.
In order to win this grant we promised to provide 1,522 volunteer hours in the next 2 years and $9,302 in the next 1 year!
Please help us by joining the email list above to follow the trails progress and help us with possibly needed volunteer hours or cash donations.
The Creekside Trail Repairs raised $1,900 in funds during Amplify Austin but still have a little ways to go. If you would like to help us reach our goal and see a beautiful 1+ mile loop be completed around Balcones Park! Click HERE to Donate TODAY!

Balcones Park got an excellent facelift last Saturday during the 1st ever Fall – It’s My Park Day! A Huge Thanks to Erik Harris, Austin Parks Foundation, Aggies Selflessly Serving In Shaping Tomorrow (ASSIST) who accounted for a majority of our volunteers, Home Depot and i Fratelli Pizza who generously donated their delicious pizza to all of the volunteers!
If you haven’t tried i Fratelli Pizza yet you should! A perfect dinner option while holding your breath over the elections maybe… (512) 795-8744 www.ifratelli.net
(Don’t forget to tell them Thanks for supporting our park when you call!)
We felt very fortunate that the great group of ASSIST traveled all the way from College Station to break a sweat, get soaking wet and dirty to make a difference in our park! A great bunch of students!
The volunteers accomplished improvements along edge of the basketball court, plantings at the bathroom rain garden, trash pickup, debris clearing in the creek, reclaiming of the playground pea gravel and more! We hope you all see the hard work when you are out next enjoying the park! For more pictures go here.
